Great Town of the year 2009! - January 2010

Richmond was named “Great Town of the Year 2009” at a prestigious awards ceremony.

The town held off competition from fellow finalists Chichester and Stirling to scoop the top national prize.

The awards are run by the Academy of Urbanism, made up of UK academics and town planners. Richmond won following a rigorous assessment process, based on its character, governance, commercial viability and sustainability.

Councillor Melva Steckles, Leader of Richmondshire District Council, said: “Everyone in Richmondshire should feel rightly proud of this accolade. There are so many special places throughout the district, and it’s excellent to see Richmond acknowledged by this prestigious award.”

Councillor Linda Curran, a ward member for Richmond on Richmondshire District Council, said: “I always consider it to be a privilege to live in such a beautiful place where the heritage of the past is celebrated and enjoyed by us all. I am delighted that Richmond has gained this wonderful award and I hope that people will be encouraged to come and visit our wonderful town.”
